TV3 is defending its controversial move to restrict the topics of their upcoming leaders debate to focus on 80′s popular culture after the decision was met with a storm of criticism.
Mark Jennings is the director of TV3′s News and Current Affairs. He insists that the network was forced into its current position by the two main parties, Labour and National.
‘The leaders have made a political choice,’ Mr Jennings said. ‘They have agreed that the majority of viewers are not likely to watch a debate about domestic and foreign policy so we intend to concentrate on where the party leaders stand on the early career of Madonna and whether Ghostbusters is funnier than The Lost Boys.‘
Mr Jennings said today that he stood by the decision.
‘Our market research shows that less than 5% of viewers are interested in watching politicians debate education, taxation or health care but more than 60% will tune in to watch Key and Clark singing Bohemiam Rhapsody together.‘
Helen Clark announced that she looked forward to the debate in which she intended to show that John Key was unprepared to be Prime Minister and that Stevie Nicks was better than Cyndi Lauper. Key responded by challenging Clark to name four songs off the Motley Crue album Girls, Girls, Girls.
‘She cannot because she doesn’t have the facts and because she does not care about the Crue,’ Key told reporters. ‘She doesn’t care about Def Leopard, she doesn’t care about Bon Jovi and quite frankly New Zealanders are sick and tired of it.’
The bulk of the debate will focus on 80′s films. Initial reports sugggest the two leaders are united in their support of The Breakfast Club, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off and The Goonies but bitterly divided on key issues such as whether Labyrinth was better than The Dark Crystal.
They will also square off over the question of ‘Best 80′s Movie of All Time’. While Prime Minister Helen Clark has announced that she will endorse either Tootsie or The Princess Bride, National Leader John Key has indicated that he will argue vigorously for the movie Aliens which he describes as kickass totally awesome.
‘We’re on a one way express-elevator to hell,’ Key said in a brief written statement to the media which appeared to quote extensively from the film. ‘I say we dust off and nuke the site from orbit. Get away from her you BITCH!’
A spokesperson for Key later revealed that the statement was released in error and related to internal National Party matters unconnected to the debate.
What you talkin’ bout Clark and Key? will screen on TV3 at 7:30 PM on Friday the 17th of October.
This will be a little challenging for those of us who don’t know any of those movies, but a lot more interesting than a debate over the usual topics.

Your mileage may vary but Aliens and Princess Bride are widely regarded as two of the all time great action and comedy films, respectively.

Danyl, you are wicked!
Long may it continue.

harumph – the greatest albumn is Disintegration by the Cure. Only Robert Smith can save us.
Like the drummer from Def Leppard you can only be writing with one hand. Other than that you do seem to be keeping cool till after school.

Brilliant. Yes, I would watch this. And perhaps the minor party leaders could take part in a version of “The Weakest Link” or “Wipeout” (my children watch this, not me, of course)? Helen Clark’s favourite movie is The Princess Bride, does she see herself as Buttercup? (no) The Dread Pirate Roberts? (closer but no) … it must be the Sicilian criminal genius Vizzini, except she would get Winston to drink the cup.

I like the party-leaders-on-Wipeout idea a LOT. The ratings would be phenomenal.

Oh and the debate sounds like it’ll be as predictable and pedestrian as ever with both Key and Clark clearly battling for control of the centre. The Princess Bride, Aliens and Ghostbusters, really? Talk about trying to make the least offensive picks and not taking a stand on anything. When will one of them take the risk of backing something even a little bit risque? I’ve heard that Clark loves Porkies and The Money Pit and Key is a huge fan of Trading Places, Say Anything and Sledgehammer.
At least Peter Dunne won’t be there to boring it up with overly populist arguments for Top Gun and E.T.

Clearly they are right to keep the minor parties out of this debate; otherwise, Peters would be arguing that we have been swamped by immigrant media and making a claim for The Clean and for Vigil, while Dunne would be saying that the sensible option is for The Straitjacket Fits. Sharples would be demanding Utu.

I would genuinely like to know what Winston Peters favorite movie is.

From the 80′s? How about Stand By Me… Reckless… Die Hard… and Who Framed Roger Rabbit?

I always thought a Survivor series for the leaders of the wee parties on some exotic island (Pitt, Little Mangere? – bit too cold for bikinis, tho’), where they could form alliances, grab immunity and vote each other off, would be ideal foer the months leading up to and after the election -

ahem. tootsie would be my guess.
