Don’t say I never do anything for you

Filed under: general news — danylmc @ 10:36 pm

Bryce Edwards dumped a bunch of the NZ WikiLeaks cables on his blog today: 243 cables in one big pdf file. I’ve parsed them out and tried to make them easier to read, and sorted them into date order with a brief summary. (They’re a bit tricky to work with so they’re still rather messy.) They’re all listed and linked below the fold.

If you find something worthwhile then quote it in the comments, with the cable number. If you’re going to tweet it then try and fit in the #cablegate hashtag and the cable number as a hashtag. Alternatively, we could start using a domestic hastag: I nominate #kiwileaks.

  1. These documents are classified for a reason. Sure they might be widely available now, but stop helping to spread them further. I don’t care if they’re compromising do individuals, they’re also compromising to national security.

  4. Besides, the weather outside is terrible.

Indeed. the choice for Wellingtonians appears to be (a) don’t wear a jacket: get soaked in rain, or (b) wear a jacket: soak in your own sweat.

    Comment by Phil — December 21, 2010 @ 11:07 am

  5. “they’re also compromising to national security”

I’ve been surprised at how utterly mundane most of them are. I always wondered what it was that diplomats between friendly countries actually did – there can’t be that many meetings on issues of international significance to attend. But I suppose if you pay a bunch of bright diplomats to sit around all day they have to find something to analyse just in case to impress their bosses. Self fulfilling process in a way.

    Comment by insider — December 21, 2010 @ 11:49 am

  6. Danyl there is probably someone from the U.S. Embassy in Wellington sending a “confidential” cable to the State Dept about you, right this very minute.

Look forward to reading it soon…

  9. WTF is a cable

A particularly well formed piece of shit, innit?

    Comment by Pascal's bookie — December 22, 2010 @ 11:28 am

  10. Pascal, is that preferable to dots and dashes?

  11. they’re also compromising to national security

Firstly, as the cables themselves show, that’s bullshit – unless you consider exposing the US government as a bunch of morons and hypocrites to be a breach of “national security”. But even if they were, we’re not Americans, so why should we care?

The proposition that citizens in a democracy owe some form of loyalty to their government is dubious at the best of times (it gets the democratic relationship precisely backwards). The idea that we owe loyalty to someone else’s government is even crazier.

    Comment by Idiot/Savant — December 22, 2010 @ 2:42 pm

  12. Funny:

09WELLINGTON04 puts great stock in the future-telling abilities of the Dom Post’s editorial pages – which is hilarious, because the best thing about the Dom Post’s editorial pages is their absorbency.

These cables show that either US diplomats are uniformly ignorant about key issues, or that NZ gets the shitty ones.

    Comment by Dizzy — December 22, 2010 @ 5:12 pm

  13. Yup, Dizzy, that’s what i thought – to be a diplo, all you have to do is regurgitate Dom Post’s editorial, get unnamed LP policy advisor to grumble about labour (which they’ll do sans prompting), label the whole shebang `confidential’ and its money for jam…
How come i never jobs like that?

    Comment by leopold — December 22, 2010 @ 6:56 pm

  14. Cheers for the encouragement J. I shall spend the rest of my evening on a copy/paste bender. Your rather limp outrage makes the smell of your old world burning all the sweeter.

    Comment by El Mutante — December 22, 2010 @ 8:02 pm

  15. Leo, when you say “jobs” do you mean pascal “cables”?

    Comment by leon — December 23, 2010 @ 7:41 am

  16. Was using the colloquial as in work, not the vulgate. But you’re right. All these best and brightest off to get diplomatic postings where all they have to do is scan the Com Post editorial every morning (that makes yr average diplo, Farrar, Dim and Russell as total readership -am sure the editorial writer is on auto-pilot). Chat in some poncey bar with garrilous and grumpy LP worker and defence dept underling, and bung off their opinions to State Department – who could have got it all on-line from Kiwiblog or the Standard. And the daily grind (no double entrendres svp) is over. OTOH, the NZ posting is not for the high flyers, I suppose, but still…

    Comment by Leopold — December 23, 2010 @ 9:26 am

  17. 09WELLINGTON04

Erm, that one doesn’t exist in the list Danyl’s provided…

    Comment by Phil — December 23, 2010 @ 12:31 pm

  18. All we really know is that diplomats don’t know the real secrets. The American over-reaction is perhaps not just arrogant hubris entitlement (to spy on, but not be spied on), but in part a crafted strategy to suggest they have nothing left to hide.

    Comment by SPC — December 23, 2010 @ 3:31 pm

  19. Yeah, difficult to work out which that could have been. I did, of course, mean 09WELLINGTON104.

    Comment by Dizzy — December 23, 2010 @ 9:49 pm

  20. Does anyone know which of these cables Helen Clark is refering too in:

    http://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/news/article.cfm?c_id=1&objectid=10696656

The one which says we are of two worlds, those who like the US (Goodies) and those who don’t (baddies) I’d love to write that one up for cablewiki.net
