The Telegraph reports that the man who lives in the House That Looks Like Hitler is bewildered by the sudden flurry of attention. The photo at the linked page reminds me that we only ever see a tiny handful of pictures of Hitler, all of which make him look spooky and evil, but in reality he looked much the same as any other European statesman in the early 20th century. The photo below was taken at the opera in Munich in 1937, and it was never reproduced in post-war Germany because it was seen to glamorise the Nazi regime.

I think it helps to grasp the source of his power and influence if you understand that he was one of the first modern media celebrities, instead of regarding him as some sort of incomprehensible evil.

  1. I wish they gave his name, I’m guessing my mum knows him.

  2. On that particular subject, it’s worth reading Wolf and Winnie, by AN Wilson.

  3. One of the unis (or someone) had some ad campaign with a (real) photo of Hitler doing the dishes. It was disconcerting to see him doing something mundane like that.

  4. This is my favourite Hitler image:

  5. So true. My usual esprit de l’escalier, in response to someone on the epic PAS thread who said that if Gandhi, King and Mandela formed a political party & people didn’t vote for them just because they didn’t get enough screen time, it would be fair to blame the media — the point with those guys was that they aren’t well known just for their great deeds; they’re icons of humanity because they were all major celebrities who knew how to influence and inspire people.

So, somehow, I don’t think the Global Peace Party would have had trouble getting screen time.

  6. Media Studies 101 stuff going on here Fellas with this grudging admiration for Nazi media strategy. If only Goff’s communications team watched the History channel more often they could learn a thing or too from Dr. Goebbels and Leni Riefenstahl about making an unpalatable leader more media friendly. Did you know the Nazis also built great motorways?

    Comment by The Fox — March 31, 2011 @ 8:52 am

  7. @6
so if the last labour government had spent a shedload of cash on the auckland motorway system, goff would not be dead man walking?
of course that presupposes that any planned road schmes were never priced way beyond affordability and then subsequently an inferior scheme built instead. or not built for maybe 50 or 60 years [transmission gully anyone?]

good lord only 1 coffee so far today. i am a rambling mess.

    Same thing, surely

  9. I think the Nazi media strategy was pretty crude by today’s standards. I can’t imagine they ever did market research – Hitler would have laughed at the idea.

  10. The all-time classic Hitler soft story is probably the 1938 Homes & Gardens feature, ‘Hitler’s Mountain Home':

There is nothing pretentious about the Führer’s little estate. It is one that any merchant of Munich or Nuremberg might possess in these lovely hills.

The entrance hall is filled with a curious display of cactus plants in majolica pots. Herr Hitler’s study is fitted as a modern office, and leading out of this is a telephone exchange. From here it is possible for the Führer to invite friends or Ministers to fly over to Berchtesgaden, landing on his own aerodrome just below the chalet lawns.

Indeed, they were just a bunch of rabble rousers with canny knack of being able to tap into the latent fascism of the Petit bourgeois. Just like Kiwiblog really.

  12. It’s always disconcerting to think of monsters as being banal humans when they’re not skinning infants. I laughed at my mother when she once told told that Hitler’s big brother worked as a porter in the Shelbourne Hotel in Dublin, but it turned out to be true. Good job certain things don’t run in families: “Oi, Aloysius, get the stuff from the car and don’t be invading Poland while you’re there…”

  14. The fact of the matter is that Hitler took the rap for a plot that was concocted by the Windsors. If Germany had conquered England, the Windsor fortune would have remained intact. This is something that many people do not understand.

The English throne belongs to the Stuarts. The Stuarts are descended from the House of David. King David was Jewish. The Stuarts are also Jewish. The Windsors are a bunch of social climbers who have only survived the centuries because of their cunning and manipulativeness and ability to marry into royal families (Tudor, House of Orange, etc).

The eradiciation of Jews in Germany (wealthy, mostly forthright, descended from King David) means they (the Windsors) get to keep their throne indefinitely.

By the way, Rothschild is not a Jewish name. They look like Jews, they sound like Jews, they’ve married into Jewish families, but alas, they are probably not descended from King David.

Geoff Rothschild, a financier from South Africa, pleaded guilty to five counts of permitting fraud in 1999 I think it was. You’ll find the Rothschild name scattered in financial institutions throughout the whole world these days, even in New Zealand and Australia. So much for their claim that their fortune has been diminishing for the last seventy years.

Another thing: Kate Middleton’s mother was a Goldsmith. The Goldsmiths, I allege, are pawns of the Rothschilds. Another interesting fact: Annabel Vane-Tempest-Stewart married Sir James Goldsmith, and their son, Ben Goldsmith (worth a cool $500M) married Kate Rothschild.

  15. I see, but which branch of the family set up the Masons?

    Comment by Clunking Fist — March 31, 2011 @ 1:45 pm

  16. Too much crazy there to drill into, except to point out that most victims of the Holocaust were poor Jews living agrarian lives in Eastern Europe, so probably not a serious threat to the Windsors.

Brilliant, I’ve never come across a genuine British Israelist before. It’s like finding a living dinosaur roaming around One Tree Hill.

Probably the guy who runs the BI shop on Dominion Road. There couldn’t be that many around could there?

  24. Yes, most of the Jews were poor. This is called natural selection. The rich Jews (Rothschilds, still not a Jewish name though) bought their way out of trouble (murder).

The thing about all these ‘poor Jews’, though, is that they may have been poor but they still had their lineage. Every so often, the murderous elite love to exterminate a few thousand, tens of thousands, or hundreds of thousands of people. It gives them something new to talk about to each other instead of thoroughbreds, polo, and fishing.

  25. Fishing for Jews?

  26. John Key grew up in a state house, so he must have been poor, so that proves he’s Jewish. “Key” comes from lock, or locksmith. And I find it highly unusual that there is no Worshipful Company of Locksmiths. It’s just another example of antisemitism.

    Comment by Clunking Fist — March 31, 2011 @ 6:40 pm

  27. Key’s mother came from a wealthy family. He did grow up in a state house, yes, but he used family contacts a lot throughout his career. This is partially why he is worth a lot of money these days, and why he is PM (by the way, the Key family fortune is more than the $55M quoted in the NBR. Through various trusts, companies, and other close relatives, the fortune would stand, I estimate, at around ten times that.)

    Comment by Betty — April 1, 2011 @ 12:57 pm

  28. So he’s not Jewish? We should be allowed to see his birth certificate.

    Comment by Clunking Fist — April 1, 2011 @ 1:00 pm

  29. Betty, I can’t work out whether you think the Jews are bad or good. Could you elaborate please?

  30. Careful: “Bearhunter” used to be known as “Wolfhunter”, a long time Mossad Nazi hunter. He is offically “retired” but do that type EVER retire?

    Comment by Clunking Fist — April 1, 2011 @ 1:16 pm

  31. “…a long time Mossad Nazi hunter”

Damn those Mossad Nazis. And no the (insert animal name here)hunters NEVER retire.

  32. “The Goldsmiths, I allege, are pawns of the Rothschilds”

what about Rachael Goldsmith, Invercargill Green Party activist and putative Clutha-Southland candidate?

I would suggest that there is a secret one. And it is run jointly by John Key and Keith Locke.

and surely it isn’t a coincidence that the Speaker of Parliament is called Lockwood Smith.

  34. Where does that leave Imran Khan? In fact, the whole cricketing fraternity.

  35. Who would have thought a post could start with a house that looks like Hitler and get exponentially sillier?

Also, this will probably be the Listener’s cover story next week: ‘How Hitler affects property prices’.

  36. “what about Rachael Goldsmith… Green Party activist” – Infiltrated!

“Key… Keith Locke… Lockwood Smith” My God, it’s worse than I thought.

They WANT you to think it’s silly, Helena Lex, but you’re in danger of misunderestimating them. Luckily, Wishart (from Wise Heart, his Dakota name) is keeping tabs on them.

agreed, listening to some of the recently released secret Finnish recordings of Hitler’s conversations, i was struck by how ordinary and normal-sounding his usual speaking voice was – in stark contrast to all the other audio recordings of him we’ve heard

  38. I’ve finally realised why John Key does not stand for election in Epsom, which is his local electorate. Because if he did, he would be standing against Keith Locke, and this breaks one of the golden rules of the Guild – that Lockes and Keys NEVER stand against each other!
