Google suggests results for the leaders of our two main parties:
David Shearer is…the Anti-Key
Comment by northshoreguynz — August 21, 2013 @ 10:40 am
In fairness i’m sure John Key would ahve had similar results in respect to Helen Clark a few years ago
Comment by max — August 21, 2013 @ 10:49 am
David Shearer should worry that one thing worse than being talked about is not being talked about
Comment by Leopold — August 21, 2013 @ 10:51 am
Max, you are being ridiculous. “In fairness” you say.
This is a political blog. There is an equal likelihood of fairness on this blog as there is on Whaleoil.
Actually I just tried Helen clark is and google’s first option was Helen Clark is a man.
The mind boggles.

Helen Clark is a man
Helen Clark israel
What’s with “israel” with both Sheaer and Clark.
Is that the usual pre-occupation of the left and right with whether someone is sufficiently pro or anti Israel?

“Is that the usual pre-occupation of the left and right with whether someone is sufficiently pro or anti Israel?”
Probably not. The word “is” is usually treated as a stopword in search indices and query handlers, so proper nouns or dictionary words starting with the letters ‘is’ will tend to get a higher relevancy ranking when searching a phrase like “blah blah is”, since it’s trying to help you complete a phrase, including partial words, and “is” is so common it’s hard to determine relevancy.
So actually, what it means is that SO many people have searched for the other phrases (Helen Clark is a man, John Key is an idiot, Winston Peters is a racist, etc.) that in spite of the stopwordyness of ‘is’, they’re rising to the top along with more typical search engine autocomplete suggestions like “David Shearer israel”, or, oddly, “Peter Dunne lego island”…
Fun game though.

well if it isn’t Netenyahu’s lead propagandist. Here to obfuscate the issues with search engine theory.

If Peter Dunne proposes turning Johnsonville Mall into a Legoland, I will move back into his electorate to vote for him.

Interesting that Don Brash, Hone Harawira, and Winston Peters all have the same first suggestion… (it shouldn’t be too hard to figure out what it is)

Oh wait – this from John Key is a douche:
There’s 14 minutes of my life I’ll never get back…
Comment by Sam — August 21, 2013 @ 2:25 pm
Flip it around and type “Is John Key” and see the suggested completions.
Illuminati, Freemason, dead, …

Whereas the equivalent “is David Shearer” has as third autocomplete “who is David Shearer”.

The latest Roy Morgan poll appears to concur with Google.

‘David Shearer israel’ comes up partly because he was based there for a while. Not sure why people search for it, though. Sadly ‘Peter Dunne lego island’ refers to a different Peter Dunne.

You missed out ‘John Key is a freemason’. That comes up with a lot of images to supposedly prove it. But, noticeably absent, is ‘John Key is a reptilian’ which is strange because he fought that perception for a few months in his first term and there was never the suggestion in the mainstream media pertaining to freemasonry.
