Paging Ian Wishart

Filed under: general idiocy — danylmc @ 10:36 am

From Stuff:

Thirty-nine years after meeting his “sweetheart” at university, Lockwood Smith has finally got around to popping the question.

The Speaker of the House and one-time television quiz master proposed on Christmas Day to his long-time girlfriend, Alexandra Lang.

I’ll be fascinated to see if Mr Wishart is willing to go there – and what the reaction from the right-wing blogosphere will be if they do.

  1. Sigh. I doubt it, because Clark ostensibly got married simply to advance her political career. Hard to find a motive for Lockwood beyond being tired of being harrangued by everyone he knows – 39 YEARS, JEEZ LOUISE!

  2. It’s because he’s now the speaker of the house.

  3. Maybe he’s celebrating that fact.

  4. as long as he doesn’t actually grow the beard he should be sweet as.

  5. Bit of a missleading quote. Here’s the context.

“For 25 years they lived separate lives before a chance meeting brought them back together again in 1999.”

  6. Thanks scrubone. Ok, replace ‘separate’ with ‘secret’…that’s right, I went there.

  7. I have to admit I was a little surprised when I saw the story in the papers.. I had always assumed he is gay… Another stereotype destroyed. Not all never married men in their late middle age with a full head of hair, slim and sartorially elegant are queer. Who’d a thunk it?

  8. barnsleybill… you might not be as far off the mark as you might think. After all this is the man who got in hot water with the NAt Party after he was due to have trade talks in Paris with the Chinese last time he was in govt but blew off the meeting to buy a suit in the city of love. I know many people who worked at parliament a decade or so ago and there are many storys of Lockwoods secret [redacted]

[Comment edited so that the Speaker of the House doesn’t sue me or throw me in prison but left intact enough that everyone has a pretty good idea of what was said. – Danyl]

  9. Maybe you are all right. He could have been Bi but now hes not?

  10. well danyl, i haven’t seen any RWDB kicking up a fuss yet, and there is obviously gossip about the Speaker out there.

    hypocrites much.

    Comment by Che Tibby — January 29, 2009 @ 7:33 am

  11. Has Smith ever made gotten married, or deliberately not got married, as a political statement or for political ends?

Is there any political motivation this late in his career for suddenly getting married, other than a genuine desire to formalise a relationship?

And IIRC, isn’t the growing view in gay academia that sexuality is a sliding thing and that just because you may feel like one pigeonhole today doesn’t mean you’ll fit hat pigeonhole forever.

So, yawn. If there is evidence of improper behaviour somewhere, that’s one thing, but shacking up late in life isn’t a crime is it?
